Takashi Miike's ‘Yakuza Apocalypse’ Movie Update: ‘Weird’ Trailer Shows Gangster Story; Film To Play At Cannes

By

Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike's mind couldn't be more prolific and peculiar as the trailer of his latest film "Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld" has now released featuring a weird gangster story. Miike is known for bizarre movies in his time and this year, crazy sounding "Yakuza Apocalypse" will be a part of the line-up for Cannes Directors' Fortnight.

This film focuses on a guy named Akira, who is excited to become a part of a Japanese criminal underworld. As his dream was finally achieved, he was disappointed that it turns out the real gangster life he's long admired isn't like the movies. But there's one more thing, he soon discovers that his boss, the powerful Yakuza of them all, is a vampire. Now, Akira's boss was killed by an assassin, and he's on the verge of plotting revenge and seeking justice. Much of Takashi Miike's works depict the activities of criminals especially yakuza. He is known for his dark sense of humor.

Meanwhile, the motion picture is led by Hayato Ichihara who is known for his role in "All About Lily Chou-Chou," and with all the madness on the film, Yayan Ruhian is also on board to add action. Ruhian played Mad Dog in "The Raid" and a different character Prakoso in "The Raid 2." Miike's film will be totally goofy as evident to what is shown in the trailer, there seems to be a person wearing a big fuzzy frog suit, who rides a bike with some sort of rocket ability. Even with no English subtitles, the trailer catches some attention.

Miike's "Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld" opens on June 20 in Japan but doesn't have an international release yet. It is one of the films to be playing at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, an independent section held in parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. It will run in ten days from May 14-24. The line-up also includes Arabian Nights (Miguel Gomes, Portugal), Songs My Brothers Taught Me (Chloé Zhao, US), and among other foreign and independent films.

Do you think Takashi Miike's "Yakuza Apocalypse" will outperform the other films at Cannes? Would it also outdo the previous Takashi Miike movies? Don't forget to watch the "insane" trailer and share us your thoughts!
