Esperanza Spalding may still be overwhelmed for her successful "Radio Music Society" tour cycle but she's still not sated as she announced recently that she'll be hitting the road this Spring and Summer for her newest project "Emily's D+Evolution." The said project will feature a summer and spring tour focused around rekindling her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement.
According to the bassist/vocalist/composer, the latest project was visualized when she had a dream the day before her birthday, she told Metro.us last year. "This sounds really freaky deaky, but it's true. And it scared the bejesus out of me ...." Esperanza Spalding continued. She had then bent her frightening dream into something good.
In the new project, Spalding explains that it will feature all new material, incorporating elements of her lifelong passions for theatre, poetry and movement, all promises to tell a story that features "live musical vignettes." She tells Pollstar: "This project is about going back and reclaiming un-cultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand."
As for the reason behind the title "Emily's D+Evolution," Spalding expounded: "Emily is my middle name, and I'm using this fresh persona as my inner navigator." The Grammy award winner also wants to establish a realm in every song, "My hope for this group is to create a world around each song, there are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music. We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies," Spalding continued.
But before kicking off for the road, Spalding will perform songs from her third studio album "Chamber Music Society" and the her fourth "Radio Music Society" in sold-out shows at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on April 26 and at the SF Jazz Center, Miner Auditorium in San Francisco on April 30-May 3.
