The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, which has been rolled out to Google Nexus Player, comes with bux fixes and improvements for issues caused by Android 5.1 update on Nexus devices. Issues like camera crashes and the persistent memory leak bug were seen in Nexus devices, such as Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10, after getting the Android 5.1 update and nearly rendered them useless.
In a blog posted by Google, the newest Android OS will include the following fixes for Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 devices: fix for camera timeout, security issues, and improvements for remote passthrough feature on Chromecast. However, bug fixes for the notorious memory leak may not be included in the latest Android OS update. Current changelogs don't point to any memory leak bug fix, but a report said that it could be present on devices that have caused the problem to happen on various devices, such as Motorola handsets.
Besides the possibility of some camera and flashlight bug fixes, the Android 5.1.1 may as well fix some loading issues and security flaws like the Galaxy S5 fingerprint vulnerability. Google's Android Wear will also be supported by Android 5.1.1. The wearable platform comes with new features like handless gestures, offline functionality, and "the ability to draw emoji on the watch face and send it as an SMS."
While Nexus devices are waiting for Android 5.1.1 update, NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet or SHIELD Portable may finally get updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop based on some forums posted on the brand's support section. The rollout, according to a comment on the forum, may happen soon and provide several performance update to the device.
Google has started rolling out the newest OS update with factory images, but it could be available via OTA for other Nexus devices. After which, Motorola handsets are expected to be in the next line for the newest Android version rollout.
The latest Android update, Android 5.1.1, will also be released in a phased manner on Nexus devices including the Nexus 9 which is reported to skip Android 5.1 for the newest software version. Other bug fixes update can be expected on other Android devices as changelogs get updated and customized. Device owners that do not want to wait for the official OTA roll out update can always download the factory image that is uploaded by Google on its website once the OS becomes available to a device.
