Mojang has recently released a brand new beta build for Minecraft: Pocket Edition, version 0.11.0 beta 6. Mojang has also addressed a publicized security problem in the servers of Minecraft by releasing a new version of Minecraft called Minecraft 1.8.4. The patch not only fixes the security flaw and issues outlined on a blog post by Ammar Askar, it also fixes other "arguably worse" exploits.
Mojang developer Johan Bernhardsson recently revealed via Twitter that version 0.11.0 beta 6 of Minecraft: Pocket Edition is now available. Bernhardsson simply tweeted, "Beta 6 released, still no skin packs but we are working on them. :)"
Although the new build did not fix many things and skin packs are still not available, two new features have been added including the skin selection player model rotation and the ability to swap items equipped on the selection bar.
On April 16th, Pakistan-based coder Ammar Askar made a blog post explaining the technical details regarding the vulnerability of the Minecraft servers. He also explained how he tried multiple times to inform Mojang of the problem but was repeatedly shot down or ignored. Finally, a day after the said blog post, Mojang released the new version of Minecraft 1.8 called 1.8.4 which fixes the problems Askar have outlined and other minor bug fixes and performance tweaks.
Askar said that he first made contact with a Mojang employee back in 2013 when the Minecraft version was still 1.6.2. After two years and two major versions, Mojang still failed to fix the security problem. Askar first privately disclosed the problem to the Minecraft team but decided to speak out after being ignored for so long. "Mojang is no longer a small indie company making a little indie game," Askar said. "They have a responsibility to fix and properly work out problems like this."
The following day, developer Nathan Adams announced the release of Minecraft 1.8.4 in his tweet, "That exploit posted last night is fixed in 1.8.4, but so are other (arguably worse) exploits. Be sure to update!"
Updating to Minecraft 1.8.4 is optional but is highly recommended in order to resolve the security and vulnerability issues. Mojang is still working hard in further developing the sandbox independent video game, Minecraft, as it continues to gain popularity and fans. Minecraft is now even available on mobile in Minecraft: Pocket Edition, version 0.11.0 beta 6.
