He may just be a tenth grader, but Jose Angel Garcia is not afraid to voice out his opinions. In March this year, he posted on Instagram calling out his guy friends and followers to carry pads and tampons with them in support of their girl friends. His photo went viral recently along with his purpose to erase menstrual taboo.
15-year-old Jose Angel Garcia took a photo of him holding two sanitary pads and posted it on Instagram with a long caption that turns out to be a call to action. Garcia encourages his male friends and followers to bring pads and tampons to school to help their female friends and classmates avoid embarrassing stain-related situations.
Garcia wrote, "We should support them with this, after all, we don't have to go through all they do because of menstruation, so it's just logical that we help them." Jose continues, "To every girl that follows me. You are completely welcomed to ask me for a pad at any time without receiving a negative response or a dirty look." He finished his lengthy message with the hashtag #realmensupportwomen.
Initially, his post did not make a buzz online until a girl from his school repost his photo, which now garnered more than 33k likes.
Jose Garcia said he has already encountered many situations wherein his female friends have to deal with sudden leaks, even settling with unsanitary ways just to avoid stains.
In an interview, the Instagram famous said he aims to erase the negative stigma of menstruation in the society especially among men who finds it "repulsive."
Jose Garcia understands that his Instagram post only touched a fraction of all the social issues of today. However, he still thinks there is no harm in trying to make a difference in his own little ways.
"I realize I can't help solve any of the big issues right now regarding women and men. Maybe with this hashtag I could help with other minor things," he said.
