The Ghostbusters reboot is nearly ready to shoot- new reports claim the film will start shooting in June. However, there's one very odd detail about the upcoming shoot- according to one source, it'll be shot in Boston. This may mean a big change for the reboot- a Ghostbusters film set in Boston, not New York City.
It might not seem like a big deal, but the original Ghostbusters film was extremely New York City-centric. And if the new reboot, directed by Paul Feig, was to shoot in Boston and try to replicate New York City (a regular occurence in Hollywood- shooting in one city and making it look like another), it might not work out so well. The original Ghostbusters made use of a number of iconic New York City locations, like the New York Public LIbrary (where the film's first ghost is seen) and Columbia University. The second film also featured the Statue of Liberty in it's climactic battle.
The original Ghostbusters film did shoot partly in Los Angeles, but only for the interior shots of the Ghostbusters firehouse, and the sequence where the Ghostbusters do a little bustin' inside a fancy ballroom. It may also be possible that the reboot is doing the same in Boston- shooting a couple of key sequences, while also filming in New York City, and setting the film in the same city as the original two.
Meanwhile, star Kristen Wiig recently discussed the film on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and ended up getting pranked when Ellen hid a "ghost" who popped out to scare Wiig half to death.
The upcoming Ghostbusters reboot (which seems to stick with the title 'Ghostbusters') stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Peter Dinklage, Ryan Gosling and even Ghostbusters favorite Bill Murray have been rumored for roles in the film, but the supporting cast has yet to be filled out. Presumably, Sony and Feig will take care of that before the film starts shooting in June. Check out Ghostbusters when it hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
