‘The Following’ Season 3 Episode 14, 15: Ryan makes huge sacrifice; Joe Carroll’s death caused FOX to axe the show?

Ryan Hardy made a huge sacrifice in the 2-hour finale of "The Following" Season 3 titled, "Dead or Alive" and "The Reckoning." The last two episodes served as the series finale since FOX decided to cancel the Kevin Bacon-starrer before the third season wraps up. Is this because of Joe Carroll's death?

The FBI commenced a full-blown hunt for Theo while alliances in the show were shaken in the 2-hour finale of "The Following" season 3. In last week's episode, his foster-sister Penny died, which made capturing the tech-genius criminal harder to be captured. Ryan Hardy, played by Kevin Bacon, is on downward spiral the whole season but still made a huge sacrifice in the finale that also saw the death of major characters.

FOX previously dropped the axe on "The Following" after three seasons following a significant drop in number of viewers. A report speculates that it was caused by the death of the antagonist Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy, in the third season.

Despite the number of viewers' continuous decline in the second season, FOX still decided to renew the show for third season. However, many of the series' original producers and writers left the show. "The Following" current showrunner hoped that the third season will be able to present interesting plotline that would gain its audience back. But with the said death of the show's main villain, Joe Carroll, it seems the characters dragged the whole show to the pit.

The crime show started strong in 2013, where it became the highest rated new broadcast series in adults. However, it failed to maintain its great start during its second and third season which eventually led to FOX's decision to cancel the show.

"The Following" ended with a 2-hour series finale titled, "Dead or Alive" and "The Reckoning," where Kevin Bacon's Ryan Hardy made a huge sacrifice despite his seemingly evil ways in the third season. FOX already cancelled the show, which was said to be caused by the death of Joe Carroll.
