Game of Thrones' Black Wedding scene stirs up controversy, even after being defended by George R.R. Martin and Sophie Turner

Shocking and at times, disturbing scenes are par for the course for Game of Thrones, but it looks as though the recent events caught fans off guard as they have expressed disgust and outrage over what transpired.

In the episode, Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner, is married off to the inhumane Ramsay Bolton, played by Iwan Rheon. Before the episode ends, Ramsay proceeds to sexually brutalize Sansa while doing so in front of Reek, her childhood friend, according to the Irish Mirror.

The scene has been dubbed the Black Wedding by fans of the show, and many are also claiming that it was unnecessary. The brutal elements of the scene led to some viewers even taking to social media to express their disgust over what they had just seen, according to Time.

Despite the so far negative reception of the Black Wedding scene, some prominent people with connections to the show are coming to its defense.

Sophie Turner, the actress portraying Sansa Stark, has said she actually enjoyed filming those scenes. Turner even goes on to say she loved filming those scenes and says that the added element of having her character's childhood friend watching as the brutal exchange was taking place made it all more powerful, according to the Express UK.

The actress even said she loved the challenge of filming those scenes. George R.R. Martin whose novels are the source material for the show also defended the Black Wedding scene.

Fans had brought up that the Black Wedding scene was not part of the books and thus an unnecessary addition, but Martin said the showrunners have every right to make the changes they deem essential for their own version of the story.

"The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story," said Martin.

The novelist went on to point out that changes were being made to the TV show that were not in his book even back in season one, so another alteratin now is not that big of a deal. He even claims that Game of Thrones has done a great job of sticking to its source material, especially when compared to other adaptations of novels.
