Spider Man has undergone different iteration for the past fifteen years. The live-action film adaptation has two notable actors who wore the Spidey Suit, Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Even though Spider Man is going to be reboot for a third time, fans are still wondering, who played Spider-Man better? Toby Maguire or Andrew Garfield?
Spider-Man is only the alter ego of another fictional character named Peter Parker. Before Parker gets his special spider bite, he was shy and a total nerd who was picked on by a lot of people. This was how his fellow students described him on the title page of "Amazing Fantasy #15", the first comic that Spider-Man ever appeared in. Both of the characters were already portrayed by two different actors which by the way had some terrific marks and fan appreciation individually.
Tobey Maguire, the first Peter Parker of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed Peter Parker's role like how he was described in the comics. Maguire's Parker was introduced in the film catching up the bus and finding no extra seat because the other students don't want him to sit beside them. He was definitely a sore loser. Maguire's character brought an emotional connection to the audience which made Parker's story more compelling.
Andrew Garfield on the other hand, portrayed a more modern age Peter Parker. Garfield's Parker looked hipper and edgier than his predecessor. Just like in the comics, he got picked by a lot of people which was seen in the film. Though he did not appear geekier, his portrayal of the character did really well in playing the loner side of Parker.
As for Spider-Man's portrayal, Tobey Maguire's character seemed a little too buff and wasn't much of a wise cracking hero. His films were more of Peter Parker's journey unlike Andrew Garfield's. Garfield's Spider-Man portrayed the wise-cracking hero naturally and his body structure followed the comics where it was described as fit but thin and tall like that of an acrobat.
The second version of the superhero film, Amazing Spider-Man, did not really have a strong cast. Aside from Sally Field, Martin Sheen and Emma Stone, there were no more big names included in the film unlike the original Maguire version. The first Spider-Man film trilogy had a power cast including J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe, Elizabeth Banks, Cliff Robertson, Alfred Molina, and Rosemary Harris.
Just like what was mentioned earlier, both actors had good points. Maguire or Garfield -whatever the case is, what the fans are now asking is who will be the next Spider Man? The search for its next player had involved many names including Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Tom Holland (The Heart of the Sea), Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Killing) but was concluded after the 18 year-old Asa Butterfiled (Ender's Game) was negotiated to play the part.
Who do you think is the perfect fit for the role of Spider-Man? Is Toby Maguire a better Spider Man than Andrew Garfield? Or do you think Butterfield will play the role better than his predecessor?
