"Star Trek 3" writer Simon Pegg was tasked to write a script that is a little bit different from the usual Star Trek screenplay. However, longtime fans of the franchise may not like Paramount's idea to make the latest entry a lot like Marvel's films.
Paramount is wondering why the last two Star Trek movies were both not huge box-office hits unlike Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" films. That's why they tasked writer-actor Simon Pegg to come up with a script that is less Star Trek-y for "Star trek 3" that will be more inclusive to their audience.
Now loyal but displeased "Star Trek" fans may not agree with Paramount's decision especially those who are not pleased with the reincarnations. Some Trekkers already voiced their opinions regarding "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" that both gave emphasis on action scenes and the visuals, making them like "Star Wars." Paramount's plan to cater the general audience by developing "Star Trek 3" a la Marvel movie may just put them and Simon Pegg under fire.
Pegg is the hot topic of geekdom lately when the "Shaun of the Dead" creator spit fire towards Science Fiction. Simon Pegg said in an interview that he thinks that today's sci-fi films focus more on spectacle over substance.
"Now we're walking out of the cinema not really thinking about anything, other than the fact that the Hulk just had a fight with a robot," Pegg said and even blurted that he'll leave the geekdom for these reasons.
The "Run Fatboy Run" star however, clarified his side in his official website to avoid more misunderstanding about his real opinion about the sci-fi genre.
"I did not mean that science fiction or fantasy are dumb, far from it. How could I say that?" Pegg noted. "In the last two weeks, I have seen two brilliant exponents of the genre. Ex Machina and Mad Max: Fury Road, both of which had my head spinning in different and wonderful ways and are both very grown up films."
"Star Trek 3," also known as "Star Trek Beyond" may have a different tone as per Paramount's instruction to Simon Pegg to write a less Star Treky script. This decision however, might be bad news for the long time fans of the franchise. Pegg also explained his opinion about sci-fi following his criticisms towards the genre.
