‘Game Of Thrones’ Author George R.R. Martin Weighs In On Sansa Twist; Defends HBO Showrunners

By

Sunday night's episode of the "Game of Thrones" was dubbed as one of the most controversial episodes from the highly-acclaimed HBO series. In a shocking twist, Sansa (Sophie Turner) married Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) and sealed the deal while Theon/Reek (Alfie Allen) watched them.

The scene was very much different from what Martin previously wrote as part of his novels. In the book, Ramsay married Sansa's sister, Arya. Following Sunday night's airing, fans of the "Game of Thrones" reacted negatively on social media, claiming that the scene they saw was disturbing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Martin then penned a blog post via his official website revealing the thousands of emails he has received from fans expressing their displeasure over HBO's presentation of the series. "How many children did Scarlett O'Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: She was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books, two different tellings of the same story," he wrote.

Martin went on to explain how some changes in the past seasons have had a domino effect on the current season, TV Line noted. "There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one... Small changes lead to huge changes. HBO is more than forty hours into the impossible and demanding task of adapting my lengthy (extremely) and complex (exceedingly) novels..." he added.

The author then went on to defend "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss and co-producer Bryan Cogman, who were all responsible for creating Sunday night's episode. "Two roads diverging in the dark of the woods, I suppose but all of us are still intending that at the end we will arrive at the same place," Martin concluded.

"Game of Thrones" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
