Forget Android 5.1.1, incoming Android 5.2 updates for Nexus 5, 6 to boost battery performance and memory management?

By

Google is expected to release the Android 5.2 in the coming months on various Nexus devices to fix some existing problems brought by Android 5.1 and Android 5.1.1, such as memory leak, broken applications, and others. The 5.2 upgrade is said to improve battery performance and memory management.

Android 5.1 problems

When Google rolled out the 5.1 upgrade, users still experienced problems and issues, specifically the memory leak. The problem was persistent especially on the Nexus 5. It causes the device's system RAM to not release properly when apps are closed, resulting to slower performance, apps crashing, delayed home screen launchers, and others. It affected those devices that made a clean install of the factory images and those who did an OTA update.

To prevent the problem from escalating, an Android project member reportedly said that it was being "fixed internally" though there was no "timeline for public release."

Few Android 5.1.1 issues

The fix was then made by releasing the Android 5.1.1. However, there are some problems that managed to plague Nexus 7 2012 users. After upgrading to 5.1.1, Nexus 7 2012 owners complained about broken applications, and problems about Gmail, Android 5.1.1 installations, GUI, internal memory, Google Music, and battery drain. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the problem is not affecting everyone and it seems to be an isolated problem.

Still, others are on the lookout for issues that may appear as Google continues the roll out. Currently, Android 5.1.1 update is available for Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Nexus 10, and seems to be satisfying the majority of those who received the firmware.

Android 5.2 and Android 5.3 coming?

If users don't want to update to Android 5.1.1, users can opt to wait for the release of the Android 5.2, which is expected to "steadily seep out in coming months" and is also said that it "may be in the wild already." Once it gets released, Nexus devices would be the first to receive it such as Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.

This was first spotted in Geekbench, revealing a LG Nexus 5 running an Android 5.2 OS. When the update comes out, it is expected to improve battery performance and memory management.

Many are also expecting that the upcoming Google I/O on May 28-May 29, 2015 would unveil the Android M. AndroidPit clarified that Android M is not Android 5.2. In fact, Android M could be Android 5.3 or Android 6.0.

Nevertheless, it is best to wait for Google's announcement, taking everything with a grain of salt.
