Android 5.1.1 OTA updates for Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and Nexus Player are being rolled out in phases, with a browser test showing that the firmware upgrade arrived in an Asus Nexus 7 two days ago. However, Nexus owners can choose to update manually or choose two other options to have their devices upgraded. The first is flashing factory images and the second is installing Android 5.1.1 custom ROMs.

Links for Android 5.1.1 factory images and custom ROMs for Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and Nexus Player are also given. Custom ROMs can offer user experience that are close to stock Android 5.1.1 OS, with additional features.

Android 5.1.1 OTA updates for Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and Nexus Player

It appears that more and more devices, such as Samsung and others, are getting the Android 5.1.1 update ever since Google announced its release a couple of weeks ago. However, latest progress about the Android OS upgrade is scarce. This is quite common as Google is fairly slow in releasing the 5.1.1 OTA update for various Android devices, especially for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10, and Nexus Player owners. Nevertheless, it is expected that it will hit Android gadgets very soon.

Users can update manually by going to Settings>About device>System updates>Check for update on the basis that the device runs an official build. Other than waiting for the OTA update, device owners have two other options to upgrade their units with the latest Android OS. The first is flashing factory images via Google Developers site. One of the flashing instructions reminds that Nexus owners need to have the fastboot tool, and backup any important data such as photos since flashing will delete all user data.

The Android 5.1.1 updates for Wi-Fi Nexus 7 2013 and 2012, Nexus 10, and Nexus Player goes with build code LMY47V, while the Nexus 9 comes with LMY47X.

The second option is to update their Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexis 10, and Nexus Player with Android 5.1.1 custom ROMs.

An Android 5.1.1 build LMY47V with Chroma AOSP ROM is available for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and Nexus 6. The lightweight AOSP ROM centers on battery, performance, stability, and functionality that is reportedly "close to Google's stock Lollipop firmware." It also has customizations that the stock update doesn't have such as:

  • Status bar customization
  • Navigation bar customization
  • Lock screen customization
  • Power menu customization
  • Volume rocker customization
  • And others

[Disclaimer: Procedures for custom ROMs are very technical and should be performed by a person with sound knowledge of rooting (or manual software installation) Android devices. If the step-by-step installation process is not followed properly, there are chances of the device getting bricked or being permanently irreparable. Hence, users are advised to proceed with caution.]

Nexus owners who wish to install the update can just go here.

Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners can also enjoy a CM12.1 Android 5.1.1 ROM, which also gives a "pure stock look and feel." To install it, click here.

Custom ROMs for Nexus 9 and Nexus Player and are also available via XDA Developers site. As of this writing, recent browser tests showed that Asus Nexus 7 and LG Nexus 5 running Android 5.1.1 visited the HTML5test 2-3 and 6 days ago, respectively.

Readers should take note that all data shown in the HTML5test website are unconfirmed results. Hence, these could be fake or belong to a different browser.
