It was announced, and confirmed by DC, that Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luther will be getting a new look after the Convergence event. And the news has been receiving mixed feelings from fans ever since, majority of which are rather dismayed.
Photos of Lex Luther's new look that will be released after the DC Convergence event have been circulating throughout the internet and as expected the fans' reacts and can be categorized under "so-so" and with an outrage. The green and purple scheme is still there but he's traded his usual battle suit for a trench coat, goggles, gauntlets, and a hover disk.
The intention for this look might be to make him look more modern and street-savvy, but a lot of the fans are not too happy with it. Some compare his outfit to that of Blade, others to a not-so-successful DC character called Static.
Luthor's character has undergone a lot of changes throughout comic book history, including changes in his appearance and origin. He was often depicted as a powerful and rich business magnate who makes sure that Metropolis sees him as the good guy by donating to charities and doing philanthropic work. Thus he was often shown wearing suits, even in the movies and TV shows. But in the 1940s, there was a story-arc where Luther was shown as a mad scientist and it seems that the current Lex Luther of DC comics is a combination of both - rich business magnate and mad scientist. Which could explain the rationale behind the change in his looks after the Convergence events.
Whatever DC's plans are for the future of Luther, they should maintain his supervillain status by making sure that fans are happy with how he looks. It seems that the photos circulating around the internet is final and this new look will be debuted in this coming June's release of Batman/Superman #21. And if the initial reactions are to be considered, it might not sit well with majority of the fans. It seems there's no stopping change, even for DC.
