"Orange Is the New Black" Season 3 kicks off in less than a month on small screens and if creator Jenji Kohan will have it her way, she'll include more nudity in the show. Kohan also revealed that the third season will be lighter, focusing on motherhood and faith.
During a Television Academy screening and panel fof "Orange Is the New Black," showrunner Jenji Kohan, who also said that their show is not a drama, admits that she prefers "a lot more" nude scenes in the Netflix dramedy. Kohan sat down with Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba , Danielle Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Laverne Cox, and Selenis Leyva.
Kohan said that if the decision was up to her, she'll have more flesh in the racy show. But the showrunner doesn't pursue her desire since she takes on consideration a lot of things in the current society.
"We still have this prudish, puritanical culture, and we also have so little exposure to diversity in bodies," said Kohan.
In relation to the show's edgy scenes, Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper in the series, revealed there were series of outgoing calls she made to talk with Kohan about the nudity involved in the show. Schilling shared how those conversations with Kohan reminded her of the truth of the scene.
"It's a physical manifestation of the internal vulnerability. Once that's very clear, as an actor, I can go anywhere," said the actress.
Jenji Kohan also said that "Orange Is the New Black" season 3 will be lighter compared to the second season where they "went a little gangster."
This time, the show will center on motherhood and faith. According to Kohan, their team likes to have a theme for every season but does not necessarily aim to make it too evident every episode. Kohan said that those themes give the show a cohesive sense despite having it in only humming in the background.
It is still unknown if "Orange Is the New Black" season 3 will see more nude scenes but it will surely take a lighter tone as it takes motherhood and faith as its new theme.
New episodes of "Orange Is the New Black" will be streamed by Netflix on June 12.
