Disney has withdrawn the plans of making Tron 3. Fans are not happy that the studio would terminate the Grid for good and are planning to petition for its continuous development.
No one has ever seen this coming because in an interview last December 2014, the returning director Joseph Kosinski said that the plot of Tron 3 would be taking a brand new direction. He even mentioned that the next installment of Tron would be running along the idea of "the Empire Strikes Back". Learning that from the director had made the fans anticipate for more. They had hoped for more action in the Grid with all the cycle racing and flying disks plus more exciting visual effects to grace the upcoming film.
Tron Legacy has grossed $400 million dollars worldwide when it was released in 2010. But the gross income has to be deducted by the budget which was a wopping 170 Million US Dollars. Thus, gives u only a net of less than $230 Million dollars after deducting marketing cost. Did the company found the "Tron 3" movie not a worthy investment after all? That's pretty much a good reason why it's taking some time to really push on the movie Tron 3. Though reports claim that the pre-production was already ongoing, and as per Disney calendar, the shooting would start this fall. The location was also said to be set in Vancouver, British Columbia. Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde return also made rounds in the news and forums online. Thus it was really conclusive that a "Tron 3" movie is already on the way.
This move must be all but business for Disney since Tomorrowland (another expensive live-action tent pole) has not reached the expected sales. You can't blame Disney to have doubts for Tron 3 to break box office hits. Despite the fans disappointments, the company see the movie as something less feasible when it comes to sales and profits. Rumors of a potential petition to revive the project are starting to make their rounds online.
Fans might be brokenhearted after learning this news. Everyone wants to revisit the Grid and explore the world of Tron once more, in the big screens and with an all new plot to look forward too. Hopefully, Disney still plans to move forward with the movie in the very near future.
