Disney is reportedly working on the remake of "Sister Act," the hit 1992 comedy film starring Whoopi Goldberg. There has been no available details regarding this news report but it has been rumored that the producer of "Cinderella," Allison Shearmur, will be working on the film's reboot.
Time reported that the remake of "Sister Act" will be written by Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah, two of the most talented writers regarding flicks with female protagonists as reported by Time Magazine. This duo has worked on the movies "Legally Blonde," "The House Bunny," and "She's the Man."
It remains unclear if the original lead female actress, Whoopi Goldberg, will be part of the film and what her character would be if she will be in it. This is not the first time that the renowned writers will be working with Disney as they have worked with the company before for the movie "10 Things I Had About You" acoording to The Guardian.
Hollywood Reporter states that as for the producer, Allison Shearmur of "Cinderella," which has been a very successful live-action portrayal of the animated movie, has not yet confirmed if she will indeed work on the "Sister Act" reboot, Hollywood Reporter first reported this. This does not come as a surprise since Shearmur's "Cinderella" grossed over $530 million when it was released earlier this year.
The original plot of the film "Sister Act" is about this lounge singer from Reno, Nevada, played by Goldberg, who pretends to be a nun as she is under the protective custody at a San Francisco convent. A mob boss wants to kill her thus her disguise as a nun. The film was originally produced by Disney's Touchstone Picture and it also starred other actors such as Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena and Harvey Keitel. The movie earned $232 million from theatres all over the world.
"Sister Act" had a sequel entitled "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" a year after and it was a Tony Award-winning for the Broadway musical version of the show that premiered in 2006.
