"Insidious Chapter 3" Tops Friday Box Office, Lands Third Over The Weekend

By

There are claims that horror movies do not work out in summer but Focus Features 'movie "Insidious Chapter 3" seems to have proven it wrong as it has topped the box office last Friday, outdoing Melissa McCarthy's new action-comedy "Spy". But the horror series had an expected weekend drop of 27.2% and settled into the third spot.

The third installment of the terrifying "Insidious" horror saga has gained $10.4 million on Friday, according to LA Times. It has edged out its leading competition, the 20th Century Fox's comedy film "Spy" that earned a close $10.3 million on the same day.

However, according to HitFlix, Melissa McCarthy stole back its box office title on Sunday after reaching $30 million at 3,777 theaters nationwide. This drops the rank of "Insidious Chapter 3" to the third spot, behind Warner Bros.' disaster film "San Andreas" which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

The directorial debut of Leigh Whannell, who penned the first two installments of the horror series, achieved half the $20 million its predecessor earned last 2013; but considering its low production cost, its $23 million earnings at 3,002 theaters during the weekend is already a big win for Focus Features.

"Insidious Chapter 3" revolves around the timeline when Elise Reiner's (Lin Shaye) agreed in using her supernatural gifts to communicate with the dead so that she can help Quinn Brenner, a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott of "Flipped") who has been tormented by a dangerous supernatural being.

It is both penned and directed by Whannell and star Dermont Mulroney("My Bestfriend's Wedding" ,"About Schmidt"), Angus Sampson, Hayley Kiyoko ("The Fosters") and Ele Keats ("Frank and Johnny").

Meanwhile, the rest of the rank fourth to eighth spot holders were Warner Bros.' film adaptation "Entourage", Universal Studio's musical film "Pitch Perfect 2", another Warner Bros. film "Mad Max: Fury Road", Walt Disney's "Tomorrowland" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron", Sony Entertainment's "Aloha" and 20th Century Fox's "Poltergeist".
