Apple iOS 9 & Google Android M battle of winner features goes to the next level

By

Following Google's unveiling of the Android M in the I/O, the company's mobile operating system will bring Doze and App Standby features on Q3 2015 to improve battery life in Android handsets. On the other hand, Apple is speculated to roll out the iOS 9 with Rootless and Trusted Wi-Fi attributes this September so that device security is enhanced.

Android M's winner features: Doze and App Standby

Two of the exciting attributes that Android M is expected to bring are Doze and App Standby. These have something to do with increasing the battery life in a handset running Android M such as Google Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 2015.

Doze gets activated when an Android device is idle for a period of time and would put the handset into a deep sleep. App Standby, meanwhile, will prohibit applications from receiving network support and suspend open jobs. This will only functional when the smartphone is unplugged from charging.

To know the efficiency of Doze and App Standby, the Android M dev preview was installed in the Nexus 5 against the same device running Android 5.1.1. The test revealed that Android M saved battery life almost 3x than the Android L.

"The Nexus 5 with Android 5.1.1 installed was projected to provide 200 hours of standby time. With Android M, the standby time was projected to jump to 533 hours," cited Phone Arena.

This shows a promising battery life for owners using Android phone devices, especially in the upcoming Google Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 2015.

iOS 9's winner features: Rootless and Trusted Wi-Fi

On the other hand, features of the Apple iOS 9 are yet to be revealed in the WWDC event. However, there are already rumors saying that its focus would be on "stability and optimization."

"It is also thought that, like OS X 10.11, iOS 9 - codenamed Monarch - will focus on stability and optimisation, rather than radical new features or design changes. This includes fixing the plethora of bugs still afflicting iOS 8 and boosting performance," reported IT PRO.

Unlike Android M, it was also seen that Apple seems not to be making battery life improvement as one of the iOS 9's key features. Instead, the company is enhancing its security through offering "Rootless kernel-level security update to mobile devices" and Trusted Wi-Fi, which are definitely going to be included in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Rootless is said to make the iOS 9 almost impossible to crack, making a "serious setback for the iOS jailbreak community." At the same time, Trusted Wi-Fi will determine what network connection is safe or not.

"This function (Trusted Wi-Fi) is for iPhones and iPads to instantly detect wireless routers and connect to them when determined to be safe. For risky connections, automatic encryption will be used to ensure protection," said International Business Times.

If Rootless and Trusted Wi-Fi turn out to be part of the package, iOS 9 will transform the iPhone devices' security into solid rock. And users can expect it in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

It is clear that each mobile operating system offers various winner features than can rival the other. However, only consumers can decide which OS wins as the decision would depend on their needs as well as preferences.
