EPIC

Epic Games announced during the Apple Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) on Tuesday that Fortnite will be coming to Mac this fall in the next version of its operating system El Captain, reports Polygon. The new "free-to-play online shooter" will be available in Mac for better graphic performance and also in beta form. Epic's representative was quoted as saying that they are targeting Mac desktops and PCs for the closed beta wherein the latter will be available in the later part of this year.

Fortnite is Epic's first unreal Engine 4 game which was was first made available over iOS 8 in 2012. Josh Adams and Bill Bramer of Epic Games demonstrated Fortnite while running on the Mac which was made possible by Apple's metal technology.

IGN reports that the demo featured a character running around a city when a big purple storm brings in zombies. Effects on lighting, weather and destruction were shown changing in real time.

ADVANTAGES

Fortnite is a zombie-killing shooter that has a cartoonish 3d graphics. Venture Beat says that the advantage of bringing Fortnite to Mac is that the game can run ten times faster on the desktop. Running a game on metal technology compared to the usual Open GL graphics gives an application 50% improvement in terms of performance and 40% in efficiency which includes a longer battery life. In fact, Adobe has tried the metal for the Mac which resulted to eight times enhancement in performance. This could also mean that Mac could compete with Valve's Linux-based Steam OS which will be made available in Steam Machines or living room gaming PCS in October.

Apple launched its metal applications last year which gave way to making Fortnite not just possible but futuristic for Mac.
