Powerpuff Girls Reboot: Will new version still be kid-friendly? Tara Strong 'heart-broken' over new version?

By

Yet another beloved 90's classic will be getting a reboot. The Powerpuff Girls made its way into the hearts of many fans back in the day with its zany humor, character designs and kid-friendly superhero antics. Cartoon Network has recently announced that they will be rebooting the cartoon series, which aired from 1998 to 2005.

The Powerpuff Girls started out as a cartoon series which was created by Craig McCracken. The storyline revolves around Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup: three little girls who were gifted with super-powers after creator Professor Utoniom accidentally adds Chemical X to "sugar, spice, and everything nice"- ingredients in making the perfect little girl.

It remains to be seen how the reboot will fare. The Powerpuff Girls isn't the first cartoon franchise to be given the reboot treatment. Scooby-Doo has been given several reboots, as well as a live-action movie. The Powerpuff Girls even had a TV special in 2014, which was called The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed.

IGN reported that Cartoon Network will carry over the same character designs and visual aesthetics of the original. So far, it has been confirmed that Tom Kenny will be reprising his role as the Mayor/Narrator for the reboot. The reboot series voice cast also includes Amanda Leighton as Blossom, Kristen Li as Bubbles, and Natalie Palamides as Buttercup.

While a Powerpuff Girls reboot will definitely get mixed reactions from the fans, it seems like Tara Strong, who voiced Bubbles in the original version feels like she was "stabbed in the heart." The voice actress, who gave life to many 90's cartoon characters, posted on her Twitter that she had "no ill feelings for the new cast."

"I have NO ILL FEELINGS 4 the actresses in the new #ppg, We were just beyond hurt we were NEVER asked..every role I breathe life into I love." Strong tweeted.

The original Powerpuff Girls had a strong and loyal fanbase because of the strong wit and zany humor the characters had. The reboot will be developed by people who are more than capable of giving the new series the same idiosyncratic energy the original had.

"It has been wonderful to see this new show team bring such passion and positive creative spirit to this iconic property. We know that fans of every age will appreciate this new take on saving the world before bedtime." said Cartoon Network Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher.

The Powerpuff Girls will be returning to Cartoon Network in 2016.
