The FBI has reportedly traced the source of the nude celebrity photos which almost broke the Internet last year. The source has been traced to a 30-year old Chicago resident who lives at home with his parents.
According to a report with NBC, the FBI's search led to a man named Emilio Herrera. Further investigation found that Herrera owned a single computer, which was linked to two email addresses which accessed compomised accounts.
However, the affidavit did not list Herrera as a suspect.
According to the documents, nearly 600 accounts could have been hacked and that 2,500 iCloud accounts were targeted. However, it was not revealed what documents were found in Herrera's home.
"Based on victim account records obtained from Apple," said Special Agent Josh Sedowsky of the FBI Cybercrimes Unit, "one or more computers used at [Herrera's house] access or attempted to access without authorization multiple celebrities' e-mail and iCloud accounts over the course of several months."
The FBI had linked various email accounts with his name, as well as an IP address to the modest brick home. Little is known about Herrera, and it is unclear on whether or not he is the hacker.
The so-called pornographic catastrophe was dubbed "The Fappening" and was feasted upon by many eager Internet users with no particular cause. While the Internet has mostly moved on from the said event, it is clear to see that the feds have been working hard to name the suspect.
Jennifer Lawrence, who is perhaps the breach's highest-profile victim has already reported her disgust over the incident. The 'Hunger Games' star said that the crime goes beyond scandal.
"It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation. It's disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That's why these Web sites are responsible." she said.
