Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge duo is now a trio with the arrival of Galaxy S6 Active. Compared to the two, the S6 Active has a rugged design, bulkier, and thus packs a bigger battery as it is made for the outdoorsy types.
Battery
The S6 Active's 3,500 mAh battery is bigger than the batteries of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge by almost 1,000 mAh. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge feature 2,550 mAh and 2,600 mAh batteries, respectively. Its predecessor, the Galaxy S5, packs a bigger 2,800 mAh battery.
Fast Charging
The S6 Edge's battery can last 18 hours of talk time and 50 hours for music play. All three devices support wireless charging system for faster charging. The Galaxy S6 for example can charge up to 30 percent within 10 to 15 minutes, and in a span of 1 and 20 minutes, charging can be completed. These fast charging capacities, according to reviews, are faster than its rival smartphones.
Waterproof but limited storage capacity
The S6 Active is also waterproof, a feature that the S6 and S6 Edge don't have. Bringing back this water resistance feature adds another bulk to the device, thus it's bigger and heavier. It also sports a body made of thick plastic to provide the much needed protection against a drop onto a flat surface. However, it is stripped of the fingerprint reader that is found both in the S6 and S6 Edge, and features only a 32GB capacity with no microSD card reader.
Active S6 Features
Other notable Active S6 features include its 5.1-inch quad-HD Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 7420 octa-core processor, and 16 MP rear camera with 5132 by 2988 pixel resolution, 5 MP front camera. The handset also supports Touchwiz and nano SIM.
It also features the Activitiy Zone, a familiar Active feature that offers utilities for outdoor adventures, such as flashlight, compass, and stopwatch.
S6 Active, S6, S6 Edge Similarities
In terms of similarities, the S6 Active and S6 Edge both feature the same camera resolution and specs. Perfect selfies and groupies are best achieved with the S6 Edge's curved edge screen, and 120-degree wide-angle selfie camera. The three handsets have Android 5.0 Llollipop on board, although yesterday it was reported that Android 5.1.1 was being rolled out to S6 and S6 Edge via OTA to T-Mobile subscribers and through the Samsung Kies software.
The Galaxy Active S6 is already available at AT&T, the exclusive distributor of the handset in the US at a price that range from $23.17 to $34.75. The Galaxy S6 Active is more of a niche product whose target market is relatively different from those of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
