In celebration of the Global Smurf Day, Sony Pictures Animation has revealed on Sunday the voice cast of the brand new, fully-computer animated Smurfs reboot "Get Smurfy". Set on a March 2017 release, the forthcoming movie will star Demi Lovato, Mandy Patinkin, and Rainn Wilson.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the new feature film will be about Smurfette and her brother's adventures in the Enchanted Forest as they search for a legendary Smurf village. The "Made in the USA" singer, Demi Lovato, will star as Smurfette, replacing Katy Perry who was signed for the role in its first two films while "Wish I was Here" star Mandy Patinkin will voice Papa Smurf. Rainn Wilson on the other hand, who already voiced Gallaxhar in the 2009 animated scifi film "Monsters vs. Aliens" will be playing the evil wizard and Smurfs' enemy, Gargamel.
"We have gathered a group of filmmakers and artists who have grown up with these loveable characters, and 'Get Smurfy' will be imbued with the same spirit of adventure that first made all of us lifelong fans of these little blue guys...and girl," says Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation.
Variety reports that the forthcoming "Get Smurfy" will also shed light to some long-held questions like "do Smurfs come in any other colors?" "Are their mushrooms organic?" or "why is there only one girl in the Smurf population?"
The Smurfsreboot will stand as the first animated entry in Sony's franchise. The first two films which featured a combination of live-action and CG animation earned $900 million worldwide.
Set to premiere on March 31, 2017, "Get Smurfy" will be directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet). As per Coming Soon's report, Jordan Kerner ("Charlotte's Web", "Smurfs") will be producing the film with Mary Ellen Bauder ("Hotel Transylvannia" ) as the co-producer.
