"Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 will be premiering this fall but fans are disheartened due to the fact that the character of Patrick Dempsey, Dr. Derek Shepherd, will no longer be seen in the upcoming episodes. Also, fans will all the more be frustrated as another exit is brewing and this time it is Ellen Pompeo's Meredith.
Spoilers for "Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 have been revealed and it includes a major twist about Dr. Meredith Grey's health. The plot of season 12 will reportedly focus on her Alzheimer's disease to give way for her character's exit. However, this is a little bit conflicting since it has been reported that show's creator Shonda Rhimes is looking for a replacement for the character of Dempsey in order to have a new love interest for Dr. Meredith, Christian Today reported.
It has been rumored that Ellen Pompeo might no longer be in the series named after her character after season 12. In the show's season 9, Grey was positive when a test was run regarding Alzheimer's. She inherited it from her mother who suffered from the disease and died back in season 3. After the season 9's big revelations, Meredith has been affected by the thought of her having the disease.
ABC creator and "Grey's Anatomy" showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, did confirm that season 12 will not be the last season of the show but the contract of Pompeo will already be expiring this season so there is a chance that the actress will no longer sign in for an extension. If this is true, "Grey's Anatomy" season 13 might be about the children of Grey so it would still be connected to the show's title.
IBTimes reported that Rhimes released a statement regarding the season 12 of the show. She said, "Now, Meredith and the entire 'Grey's Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: The carousel never stops turning."
E! News also reported that the replacement of Patrick Dempsey is Martin Henderson and he is set to join the ABC drama's season 12. He will be playing the character of a surgeon although no other details about his character have been revealed.
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 will be premiering on September 24, Thursday on ABC.
