Paul Feig's all-female "Ghostbusters" reboot has kicked off its production in Boston last Thursday. The new version of the Sci-Fi comedy reportedly follows Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy's characters, unheralded authors who write a book asserting their belief that ghosts are real. Co-starring Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, the film will hit the big screen July 22, next year.
Despite receiving so many negative criticisms from its diehard fans, the "Ghostbusters" director Paul Feig has officially commenced the filming of the forthcoming reboot in Boston yesterday. It was reported earlier that the director has already eyed the city to be one of the movie's primary filming location. Though the project is currently filmed in a new place, the crew will still shoot some scenes in New York where its previous versions were all mainly filmed.
According to Patch, the "Ghostbusters" reboot will take place in Manhattan despite being filmed in Boston. There are speculations swirling around that the crew plans to block off a section of the city's financial district for three nights to film the iconic ghost invasion scene.
Apart from its filming location, a few details regarding the reboot's plot were also disclosed on its production day. On the night before filming began, details about the Paul Feig-directed sci-fi comedy have finally come out. As per Inquistr's report, the all-female version will follow Kristen Wigg and Melissa McCarthy's unheralded author characters that will pen a book theorizing that ghosts are real.
A few years later, Wiig's character ends up as a heralded professor at Columbia University which is pretty fortunate until her old ghost book reappears. She is reportedly laughed out of the institution and reunites with McCarthy who then pairs with Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, and forms a group that aims to save the city from ghosts.
Though it appears to be closely similar to the original 1984 "Ghostbusters" film which starred Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis, Feig emphasized that the film will feature big differences especially in the technology used and the appearance of the movie.
"I love origin stories. That's my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don't want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let's just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today," Feig said.
Meanwhile, the film is rumored to feature small cameos from original "Ghostbusters" actors Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray who are reportedly already in negotiations.
The forthcoming film is scheduled to hit theaters July 22, 2016.
