The demo released at E3 for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain showed off some of the new features players can look forward to taking full advantage of when the game is officially ready to launch.
What the demo seems to hint at, is that the latest installment in the franchise is going to be anything but a doppelganger of the earlier Metal Gear Solid games.
From things such as sheep strapped to balloons and carboard box stealth tools, what becomes immediately obvious is that players will have a wide array of tasks to accomplish within the game, according to Game Informer.
In addition to the gameplay features which some would say are borderline wacky, there are other new elements that could make Metal Gear Solid V a more interesting title.
One such element is the ability to choose a character and an animal partner to enjoy free roam mode with, according to Kotaku. Each individual animal companion brings their own set of abilities to the table, meaning the free roam experience could be vastly different depending on which one the player ultimately chooses.
For example, dogs can help players spot weapons and plants on the field, while also tagging enemies that may not be immediately visible to players.
While the addition of animal companions can certainly be a net positive for the game if utilized properly, some are still saying that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is too different from earlier games in the franchise.
According to The Verge, if there is any Metal Gear game that Phantom Pain resembles the most, it would be Ground Zeroes, and that is not necessarily a good thing.
Ground Zeroes was perceived to have been an unnecessary deviation from a formula which had made the Metal Gear Solid franchise successful, and if the new game follows in that path, then the results may not be as good as Konami may have hoped for.
For now, players will have to see for themselves if the Phantom Pain is a worthy successor to the franchise when it comes out on September 1.
