‘True Detective’ Season 2 premiere receives mixed reactions from viewers; Episode 1 introduces characters with troubled past

After the very long wait, 'True Detective' Season 2 premiered last Sunday. But viewers' reactions were mixed. While many said they were satisfied and hooked, others were disappointed what episode 1 offered. The first episode taught fans that each character has a troubled past.

The HBO anthology series debuted a brand new installment on Sunday night. 'True Detective' season 2 first episode introduced us to the four main characters-Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams), Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch), Frank Seymon (Vince Vaughn) and Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell).

Episode 1 of 'True Detective' 2 has already dig deep in each character. Instead of two, Nic Pizzolatto's writing is revolving around 4 characters. The Daily Beast notes, "Season 2 of True Detective is all about playing against type, from cast to creator. There's Farrell as a depressed alcoholic with a dad bod and no desire for women; Vaughn as a ponderous, impotent-yet-ruthless crime boss; Kitsch as a tortured, sexy bastard with a big secret; McAdams as a badass cop who will cut a motherfucker; and Pizzolatto expanding his scope and incorporating women into his masculine world."

While 'True Detective' Season 2 is admittedly far different from Season 1 in terms of storyline, characters and how episode 1 started, there are plenty of promises buried beneath this brand new installment.

Although it's too early to judge, many sites and fans were quite disappointed how season 2 has started. Hufftingtonpost was not too convinced with the first episode of the sophomore season. Erin Whitney of Huffpost TV says that he was "incredibly underwhelmed" and confused with the premiere. Whitney points out that there is something wrong from the storyline and the direction of the story, which did fail to match the first season's intensity. But the site concludes that there still a hope in each character despite the disappointment of 'True Detective' season 2 premiere episode.

On the other hand, TVLine writes "True Detective's stylized writing is sharp, the plot is gripping and the opening credits so chilling." The site adds, "The Season 2 opener does little more than introduce these featured cops and tee up the crime that kicks off their shared narrative - and that's compelling enough to make you want to come back next week."
