Legendary and Universal Pictures have fortified their collaboration in bringing the prequel of Peter Jackson's blockbuster "King Kong" to the big screen. Only this time the story will solely be based on the mysterious island where Kong originated-"Skull Island." Here are three sure facts about the film, from its actors, its location and all the way to its plot.
Hollywood is filled with film franchises and that's what keep revenues rolling. Disney has its billion dollar earning branch, Marvel Studios and its long lasting partnership with LucasFilms. Warner Brothers managed to seal the deal with DC Comics and now, Legendary and Universal Pictures are bringing back the age of monstrosity. It all started with "Dracula: Untold" and now comes "Kong: Skull Island."
Marvel's Loki, "Whiplash's" Prof. Fletcher and "Birdman's" Riggan are the main stars of the prequel
Out of the many recognized films to date, "Kong: Skull Island" managed to snag three actors who've done well in portraying their respective roles in very highly recognized films. The first one who confirmed was the actor who played as the antagonizing god in the Marvel superhero franchise, Loki. Tom Hiddleston is very excited about his involvement in the project that he went out of his way to persuade "Whiplash's" titular supporting actor, J. K. Simmons to join. The last one who confirmed was "Birdman's" lead, Michael Keaton.
The prequel will be set in 1971
It has been announced not only by the studios but also by one of its actors-"Kong: Skull Island" will be taking place in the year 1971 in Detroit. Rehashing what J.K. Simmons said, "It's set in Detroit in 1971, which is where I grew up. We're going to shoot it in Detroit during baseball season, so I'll be able to go to Tigers games!" According to Cinema Blend, this timeline will enable the production different takes for the film, opening up new possibilities and plots as a whole.
The film will have explorers and it will tackle King Kong's origins in the island
Part of the film will take place in Detroit, as confirmed and it's highly unlikely that these three Caucasian lead actors would play as one of the natives of the island. They could be one of the people who first discovered it but no confirmation has surfaced just yet. The film's screenplay is put together by John Gatins. It will be directed by Hollywood newcomer Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
Bonus: The possibility of a Godzilla - King Kong Showdown
Based on the feature of Moviepilot, the film will be highlighting how things will have a different take on the monster franchise-"Legendary's story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline." This makes it ultimately possible that the film could find a way to insert Godzilla, especially when the production is head by the same houses that brought the radioactive dinosaur monster.
"Kong: Skull Island" is set to open in theaters on March 10, 2017.
