The younger and friendlier version of Peter Parker has been finally named. On Tuesday, Sony and Marvel has revealed Tom Holland as the new face of Jon Watts' "Spider-Man" reboot which is due for a July 28, 2017 release. The young actor is speculated to fight Matthew McConaughey who is reportedly eyed to play the role of the franchise's iconic super villain, Green Goblin.
The long-running speculations about the actor who will replace Andrew Garfield in the Spider-Man suit have finally come to an end. While "Ender's Game" actor Asa Butterfield may have been the frontrunner of the rumors, Sony and Marvel has announced recently that Tom Holland will be the one taking over the superhero role.
According to Business Insider, the 19-year-old English actor is known for his titular role in "Billy Elliot the Musical" which premiered in London back in 2008. He also starred as Lucas Benett, son of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, in the 2012 disaster drama "The Impossible". His first appearance as Spider-Man in Marvel Cinematic Universe is reportedly going to be in "Captain America: Civil War" which is slated to hit theaters April 29, next year.
Marvel still hasn't revealed though who will be Holland's archenemy in the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot. However, the internet rumor mill is suggesting that "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Interstellar" actor Matthew McConaughey is eyed for the iconic super villain role of Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin. According to Screenrant, Warner Bros/DC Entertainment and Disney/Marvel have been attempting to coax the 45-year-old actor to play a comic-book based role due to his recently achieved high-profile in the acting industry.
This is a mere speculation though. Considering the numerous enemies Spider-Man has in the comics and the character's two-time appearance in the franchise, there is still a possibility that the fans are not getting another Green Goblin in the reboot.
Meanwhile, Sundance director Jon Watts will helm the long-awaited film. Sony will finance and distribute the upcoming reboot. Co-financed by Kevin Feige with his Marvel team and Amy Pascal, the "Spider-Man" reboot is expected to hit the big screen July 28, 2017.
