Dwayne Johnson Updates: 'San Andreas' star to take on gorilla in movie adaptation of 'Rampage'

Dwayne Johnson is set to tackle a gorilla, a lizard and a wolf in the upcoming live-action feature for an 80's arcade game. The action star is set to have his hands full protecting America from the havoc caused by these creatures in the live-action adaptation of "Rampage."

According to a report from Deadline, Dwayne Johnson will be re-teaming with New Line and producer Beau Flynn for the project, which is set for a summer 2016 production start. The film will be based on Rampage, a classic 80's arcade game that has seen its fair share of incarnations in various gaming platforms. As of now, plots for the film are kept under wraps, but the premise involves a gorilla, a lizard, and a wolf.

The classic arcade game Rampage follows the premise of three horrible beasts who are out to destroy major US cities, including a set of iconic landmarks. All three of these beasts were originally humans who were the results of horrendous experiments by some evil scientists. It had become a particular hit in the 80's gaming platforms, and still has a cult following to this day. The franchise also saw various incarnations in different gaming platforms over the years. Hollywood has a particular interest in adapting video game franchises.

The San Andreas star had recently celebrated box-office success with the earthquake film grossing more than $400 million worldwide in box office sales. The former WWE superstar is enjoying success as one of Hollywood's most highest profile stars. The script is being handled by Ryan Engle, of Non-Stop fame. As of this writing, no director has been attached to this project. Johnson also recently starred in the stellar hit Fast and Furious 7, alongside Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
