The remake of "Big Trouble in Little China" might have the presence of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and the cult nature of the original film. However, there are still some who are uncertain about bringing back the 1986 action flick to the big screen. And now, those disparagers seem to have found a new ally on their side-the original film's helmer, John Carpenter -who claims to be "ambivalent" about the remake.
Ign notes that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has reportedly said earlier he would like the 1986's "Big Trouble in Little China" director, John Carpenter, to be involved in the upcoming remake of the action-comedy film. Days after this revelation, the 67-year-old filmmaker has finally responded to the offer. But Carpenter's retort sounds like something the "Furious" franchise actor has not been expecting.
In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Carpenter has expressed his doubt in the upcoming remake. "I'm ambivalent about a remake," he said. "On the other hand, it depends on how much they pay me." Though the director seems to be interested on his fee if ever he boards the project, no representative from Johnson has reportedly made a comment about Carpenter's statement.
The director has stressed on his Facebook page though, that he does not own the rights of the film, nor did he pen the original movie so "no harm, no foul". Despite this, Uproxx reports that the director did have an opinion on Johnson replacing Kurt Russell ("The Hateful Eight", "Furious 7") as the main character, Jack Burton. "It would be hard if not impossible to replace Kurt Russell as Jack Burton," Carpenter said. "On the other hand, Johnson has a comic touch in his performances, so perhaps."
"Big Trouble In Little China" is known to have premiered back in 1986 with Russell as the front man. It follows the story of Jack Burton who finds a mysterious and magical underworld beneath San Francisco's Chinatown while helping to rescue his friend's fiancée from bandits.
