Top Gear former presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond hint at rival show for Netflix as BBC ends new hosts' search

Top Gear former presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond may soon be producing a rival car show in the U.S. with online video streaming giant Netflix.

Speculations on this new development arose from Clarkson's exchange with co-hosts while on stage during the Australian leg of their world tour.

In a report on The Week, the three were observed teasing each other about Clarkson's American accent to which Clarkson retorts, "You're not in America." Hammond replies, "Not yet."

Clarkson was also reported to have told the live audience that they have found a new channel but refused to name who it was, according to The Mirror.

The reference to America was seen as further fuel to Clarkson's teasing comments in June that he needed to change his drinking habits to better negotiate with US producers.

Clarkson was quoted by media saying, "While I try to find a new job, I've reassessed my drinking strategy. Californians have a habit of ringing at 11pm and I couldn't think as straight as they do with their leaves and mineral water existence if I was halfway through my third bottle of Leoube."

Clarkson was dismissed by the BBC for an altercation with a show producer. The other presenters decided to forego their contracts to join Clarkson. The former Top Gear honcho's plans to come back on television with his team intact has turned up talk that the trio may be signing up with up with non-traditional broadcasters such as U.S.-based Netflix or Amazon.

However, the trio's contract with BBC stops any UK network from signing up the team on a show that will rival the Top Gear show they have left.

Some producers may have found a way to get around the contract ban by producing the show in the US, The Mirror reports.

Meanwhile, the BBC Search for the Top Gear Star to find replacements for the trio published 6 videos of applicants to the team after it closed auditions.

BBC's Top Gear has not yet released its final Top Gear hosting lineup, although, it has announced Chris Evans as lead presenter.
