"Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill is reprising his role as the Joker in Warner Bros' "The Killing Joke" animated movie. The upcoming film adaptation is slated to premiere in 2016.

The fans of DC Comics have been provided with back-to-back treats from Warner Bros with its recent trailer releases for the upcoming live-action flicks "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad". Now, the studio is bringing another superhero movie to the big screen with its newly announced animated film adaptation of "Batman: The Killing Joke".

While Jared Leto will portray the live-action version of The Joker, another actor is slated to play the animated one. Collider has confirmed that "Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill is returning to the franchise as the Clown Prince of Crime, and has actually recorded a few lines already. For those who are not familiar with him, the 63-year-old star is a veteran voice actor. He has voiced the DC supervillain in various "Batman" franchise since 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series". Hamill's portrayal of the Joker has inarguably become the most iconic version of the character, apart from Heath Ledger's interpretation.

"The Killing Joke" will be based on the graphic novel penned by the legendary Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. According to Mxdwn, the Batman tale is parted in to two stories. The first is an origin story for the Joker who is a failed comedian who gets involved with a desperate criminal scene. It then follows the controversial kidnapping of Barbara Gordon who later on transforms into Batgirl.

This animated project marks the first big screen adaptation of the comic book. Similar to most of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, the upcoming film will be executive produced by Bruce Timm. Sam Liu is attached to direct "The Killing Joke" which is set for a direct-to-video premiere next year.

As for Hamill, he is slated to reprise another popular role he is known for in J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".
