Wayward Pines ended just recently after it aired its climactic tenth episode. Wayward Pines episode 10, entitled 'Cycle', was quite the survival episode as both the residents of Wayward Pines and the insurgents worked together to defend themselves and the town from the invasion of the Abbies which, if fans could recall, were able to breech the wall after David Pilcher had shut off the town's main power source.
Matt Dillon as Ethan Burke proved to be quite the hero for this episode as he teamed up with former agent Kate (played by Carla Gugino) in order to restore the town's electricity thus reactivating the electrical fences that protect Wayward Pines from the Abbies. As the International Business Times did a recap on the last episode, Ethan's heroism was put to the extreme when he had to sacrifice his own life by setting off the bombs at an elevator shaft, thus killing off a large number of Abbies. In the process, Ethan knocked down Ben (played by Charlie Tahan). As for Nurse Pam, her confrontation with her brother, town-founder David Pilcher, seems to be quite fruitless and thus, she was then forced to end his life. At the end of the finale, we see Ben waking up to a new Wayward Pines as the statue of its founder, David Pilcher stands erect in town. The ending could quite possibly hint for a new beginning for Ben as he will in turn become like his father by assuming the position as protector of Wayward Pines.
Due to Ben's three-year coma, he wasn't that quite up to date with the events of the town. According to Food World News, aside from the fact that the townspeople had hailed David Pilcher as the town hero, the First Generation who very much took part during the finale's survival episode against the Abbies, are now the current rulers of Wayward Pines.
Series director M. Night Shyamalan has revealed in Ecumenical News how he and the authors of the books series on which the show is based on have already made plans on where the story of season two shall go. He hinted that the new season will most likely follow Ben and how he adjusts to this new Wayward Pines.
Renewal for a second season for the series is still in talks and no further announcements have been made.
