The 12 member Chinese -South Korean boy band EXO based in Seoul has announced the debut of 'EXO Channel', their very first reality TV series.
EXO is already famously popular worldwide, especially in China, South Korean and even in the US. However the boy band wants to expand and has announced that on August 7, for the very first time, EXO will debut 'EXO Channel' in Japan.
EXO Channel will be a TV series about the band. The band that is under the management of SM Entertainment will provide weekly episodes that will be aired on Saturdays starting August 7 on Tokyo TV. The goal of the series is said to help promote the band and expose them to a wider range of people. This will be the first time EXO will meet Japanese viewers, and the first time ever a TV series of a foreign band will be played in Japan.
According to Koreaboo , many think that this is quite an 'unusual move' for a foreign band to bring their success to the Japanese market especially as a TV series. A source also told allkpop site saying, "A foreign artist having a broadcast (TV program) in their name, who hasn't debuted in Japan with a CD yet, is unprecedented."
However with the success that the boy band has already reached, there are high expectations for the TV series. EXO already made their debut in China and South Korean back in April 2012 and quickly rose to becoming one of the most popular male idol groups the two countries had seen in the last few years.
Reddit.com discussed on their website what fans can expect with the new upcoming program. They stated "the structure will be like a 5min documentary movie, which will convey the charms of the EXO through EXO members' interviews and performance footage. The theme will be different for every week."
EXO Fans can prepare themselves for the first week's topic "What's EXO". The members will be talking about themselves, how they feel, and what it's like being in the group.
