The wait is almost over for Sony Xperia smartphone owners as the Japanese tech giant confirmed that the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop's official over-the-air (OTA) rollout is indeed happening in the days to come.
Although the exact date still remains unannounced, some sources from Sony revealed that Google's latest Android operating system update will hit Xperia devices before fall, before Android M begins rolling out to some other devices.
PTCRB in the US has now certified the latest Android OS version on Xperia Z3 with build number 23.A.0.546. This strengthens the news all the more, and that 5.1.1 Lollipop's release is near.
However, some reports point out the Sony is considering of heading straight to Android M to keep up with the other competing brands in the tech department such as Google's own Nexus phones, Samsung Galaxy units and LG G series.
While waiting for the official update from the firm and mobile carriers, some custom ROM developers are preparing their own releases. Custom ROMs are now available for Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, and Z3 Tablet Compact.
The update was seen lately running on these devices on Youtube. The video showcases additional useful features and notable changes to the user interface, controls and customization. Here's what users can see in the video:
1. Icon size can be changed at the Home Screen settings.
2. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles on Quick Settings now include connectivity options without going to the Settings menu.
3. Alarm is now added on the sound settings when pressing the volume rockers.
4. Volume levels of different sound output are now available using the volume rockers.

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will also be released to Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia C3, Xperia Z, Xperia ZR, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Tablet, Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua.
