Patrick Stewart has confirmed that he will reprise his role as Professor X in the upcoming "Wolverine 3". The actor revealed that the film will feature a "different version" of Charles Xavier. Directed by James Mangold, the next "Wolverine" movie is expected to hit theaters on March 2017.

It seems like the upcoming, yet to be titled "Wolverine 3" will not only bring back Hugh Jackman for his last adventure, but sees his mentor, Professor X, return as well. Former "X-Men" star Patrick Stewart has confirmed his return as the patriarch of the merry mutant family. "I think what you say is true. There is a project in development," he told Collider while plugging his new series, "Blunt Talk". The actor did not disclose further details about his character but he did hint that he would have a large role to play in the movie.

In an interview with Screenrant, the 75-year-old actor revealed to that he will be playing "a very different" Charles Xavier than the one that the fans have come to know and love. Though the actor admitted he is kept in the dark regarding the specifics, he did express his enthusiasm saying: "I don't know what that means, but I am very excited about it".

Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier, is the creator of the X-Men and founder of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Stewart first portrayed the role of the telepathic mutant in the 2000 "X-Men" film and was last seen as the character in 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future past". James McAvoy took over the role since the 2011 prequel "X-Men: First Class" and is set to reprise the part in 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse".

Meanwhile, what the next "Wolverine" film is about remains a mystery. But as previously reported, it may pick up its inspiration from the "Old Man Logan" arc from the Marvel Comics. James Mangold is directing "Wolverine 3" which serves as Jackman's final appearance as the iconic mutant. It is slated to open in theaters on March 3, 2017.
