‘Star Wars Episode IX’ Update: ‘Jurassic World’ Director to helm next installment; Outraged fans says he is ‘Not Strong Enough’ to direct

By

Fresh from the success of "Jurassic World", director Colin Trevorrow has been recently confirmed to helm the upcoming "Star Wars Episode IX". This announcement has caused online backlash from the fans who expressed their disappointment in Lucasfilm's decision. Episode IX is set for release in 2019.

Colin Trevorrow might not be directing the sequel to the record-breaking "Jurassic World", but it turns out that another huge project is waiting for the director. During Disney's D23 Expo 2015, Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has officially vested him the directorial duties for "Star Wars Episode IX". "We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe," she announced.

As noted by Digital Spy, the 38-year-old filmmaker made his directorial debut with a low-budget indie film "Safety Not Guaranteed" before taking on the long-in-the-works "Jurassic Park" sequel. Following the staggering $1.6 billion the Chris Pratt-led film grossed, Trevorrow is now the third most successful director in the all-time rankings behind James Cameron flicks "Avatar" and "Titanic".

While having the now high-profiled director on board is exciting for the studio, the fans of the franchise seem to feel the opposite. After the announcement, the "Star Wars" enthusiasts took to Twitter to express their disappointment in the newly declared decision. One commentator has acknowledged his work in "Jurassic World" but thought he is "not strong enough" to helm the concluding film of the trilogy. Many are also worried about the film being another CGI-heavy movie similar to his most recent one.

Amidst all of this, the president of Lucasfilm stays firm in the decision, believing that "the power of that film [Safety Not Guaranteed] paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled film-maker."

"Star Wars Episode IX" is slated to open in cinemas by 2019, but initial work with production artists is said to begin later this year.
