Skydance CEO David Ellison revealed that Top Gun 2 is in the works and will have a big part for Tom Cruise' Maverick. Cruise, on the other hand shared that he would want to do the sequel, given the condition that it would have to be shot practically.
According to Yibada, a sequel to the hit 1986 flick is in the works, and Ellison revealed that Maverick is up for the main role once again, and that Top Gun is not the same without Cruise' character. The first film reportedly grossed $350 million in the box office from its $15 million budget.
As for Cruise, he revealed that he's up for reprising his role, however, he also specifically demanded that it must be shot practically. "I'd like to fly those jets again. But we've got to do all the jets practical. No CGI on the jets. I'd like to fly those jets again. But we've got to do all the jets practical. No CGI on the jets," he said.
" I remember when I did the first one, I said 'Look, in my contract I had to have three flights in the F-14.' And it had to be in the film, a shot from that. So we had to film it. And luckily they wanted me bad enough to do it, so I was able to do that. I'm saying right now - no CGI on the jets." Cruise added, as reported by Cinemablend. It has not been confirmed yet whether Cruise already signed on for the movie.
According to Latinos Post, plans for a sequel to the hit film started a couple of years ago, when the original director, Tony Scott, planned on making a sequel that will not center on the world of Maverick, Ice Man, and Goose. However, the director's death caused the production of the sequel to be put on hold.
It has not been confirmed yet whether other actors from the previous film, such as Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, or Anthony Edwards will be back for the sequel, but Ellison revealed that Justin Marks is currently working on the film's script. He also revealed that the sequel may be released in IMAX and 3D.
Plot details for Top Gun 2 is currently under wraps. However, more details are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
