Google Nexus 2015 is among the lucky devices to run a version of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop via CyanogenMod 12.1 custom ROM created by developer community XDA. The Lollipop-based custom ROM brings with it a solution to the notorious Stagefright threat.
Released recently to Motorola Moto E (1st Gen), CM12.1 primarily carries the patch to fix Stagefright, a security vulnerability attack usually operating through MMS like Google Hangout and Whatsapp. The threat attacks through a video message sent to a device. When the device's user clicks the message, it could steal or destroy some data without the user knowing it. This problem was first noticed months ago after subsequent releases of 5.1 Lollipop.
To go on with the download, LG-manufactured Nexus 5 owners should take into consideration the following reminders.
1. Lollipop-based CM12.1 has to be installed to LG's Google Nexus 5 smartphone otherwise known as Hammerhead or Hammerheadcaf units. Do not attempt to use it on other devices since it might destroy some of the device's properties. Check model in Settings > About phone > Model number.
2. The device must be rooted first of all.
3. Back up all necessary data stored on the device using TWRP.
4. Ensure PC has USB drivers.
5. Charge up device to at least 80 percent.
6. Installing the CM12.1 will free device from its warranty with Google.
Aside from the bug fix, CM12.1 also brings better system performance and more fluid user interface.
