Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update: OTA and Custom Release for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 3G

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 3G are surely hitting the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update very soon but as of now the tech titan has not announced or even hinted the exact date of the release.

In the meantime, a host of custom ROMs are being released for Samsung's 2012 flagship devices along with several improvements in battery and overall system performance.

Dirty Unicorn is one of the most popular custom ROMs to offer a more personal Lollipop-based software, plus a totally new features. According to a report, the firmware has no bugs or errors with it at only 197 MB in size.

When deciding to continue with the installation, here's a few points to remember.

  • Make sure the Galaxy S3 and S3 3G has model number GT-I9300 on Settings > About phone > Model number. Using other device for the ROM might brick it.
  • Make sure the device is rooted.
  • Remember to back up all stored data in the device using the Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery/TWRP since the device will wipe out memory.
  • Install USB driver to both Galaxy S3 and S3 3G and PC.
  • Charge up device to at least 80 percent.
  • The most important thing is, by proceeding to the installation process warranty from carrier or Samsung might be voided.

To install the Dirty Unicorn based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, here are the steps:

1. Download Dirty Unicorn Android 5.1.1 lollipop custom ROM and Google Apps on PC.

2. Connect the device to PC using a USB cable.

3. Copy the downloaded file of the custom ROM and Google Apps to your SD card memory.

4. Turn off the device.

5. Remove the device from PC.

6. Press hold volume +, home and power buttons all at the same time.

7. When in Recovery Mode already, clear the memory by choosing by 'wipe data/factory reset.'

8. Clear the cache memory by choosing 'wipe cache partition.'

9. Tap 'advanced' from ClockworkMod recovery.

10. Select 'wipe dalvik cache.'

11. Proceed to the main recovery screen.

12. Select 'install zip from SD card.'

13. Proceed to custom ROM zip file in SD card.

14. Select options using the volume keys and power button.

15. Once the installation finishes, go to '+++++Go Back+++++.'

16. Reboot the device by tapping 'reboot system now.'

After a few minutes, the installation process shall be completed. To confirm the download, head over to Settings > About phone > Software update. The software version should now be Dirty Unicorn 5.1.1 Lollipop.
