Just Cause 3 Dev Diary Episode 2: Destruction highlights new explosion technique

By

Just Cause 3 Dev Diary Episode 2 shows and explains to players the formula of destroying things; the brand of destruction that is known in the Just Cause series alone. Of course, it wouldn't be a Just Cause installment if there are no explosions, chaos, and exaggerated physics.

Making explosions look and feel more real than ever, specifically for Just Cause 3, was explained by the game's designers in this second episode of the developer's diary entitled Destruction. As much as they can, they try to avoid pre-designed or scripted sequences and base it all on cause and effect, as shared by the game's founder and chief technical officer Linus Blomberg during the Just Cause 3 Dev Diary: Destruction video. According also, to Gamespot, the Avalanche designers made some interesting comparisons to games like Uncharted, which produce some exceptionally designed moments, but just the same, are controlled and scripted.

Anders Bodbacka, Senior Technical Designer, further explained this: "The world feels more reactive to what you do. It's not just one explosion, but you get this shockwave. You get signs falling, people running away, you get things burning, and it feels more alive."

To achieve this shockwave when players blow up things in the game, they had to "change(d) to pressure-based explosion algorithm," according to Colin Alteveer, Lead Mission Designer. "So now, when things explode, it's kind of more like a real explosion."

Players might want to know what's new in the game that they could destroy or explode. But Bodbacka revealed that there is something new and spectacular. The bridge in Just Cause 3 is fully destructible, he said.

It the vision for this game is taken from movies, then, there might just be a grain of reality from there. Game Director Roland Lesterlin said, "Sure, it's not the most realistic thing in the world. But realism can be left for reality. And when I'm playing a game, I want it to sometimes be surreal, and the game Just Cause is kind of about that."

For Just Cause 3 players, these developments might really be worth waiting for, as the last Just Cause installment was released in 2010. Meanwhile, according to a WCCF Tech report, a presentation of the game during PAX Prime will be held on August 28 at the Sphinx theatre. Greg Miller will be the host; with the game's Lead VFX artist Fred Hooper and Lead AI Designer Niklas Norin in the panel alongside Havok's Cormac O'Brien. They will tackle the technicalities employed in the game and explain why the combination of destruction, physics and AI will make Just Cause 3 remarkable.

This explains the whole new level of destruction Just Cause 3 offers to its fans and players. And this means that there will be a host of other ways to explode things in the game, come its release on December 1. Just Cause will be available for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.
