‘Avatar 2’ filmed back to back with ‘Avatar 3’, and ‘Avatar 4’; Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana returning in 3 movies

'Avatar 2' director James Cameron will be filming the sequel back-to-back with 'Avatar 3' and 'Avatar 4'. Actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are confirmed to be returning for all three remaining films.

Avatar won't be the only film getting a sequel. According to Den of Geek, several studios have scheduled follow-ups to numerous films to be released sooner rather than later and most are already in the works. These include popular franchises such as Marvel's 'Avengers', Disney's 'Big Hero' and all-star 'Expendables' down to surprising ones such as the nostalgic comedy 'American Pie', Tim Burton's 'Beetlejuice', and even 'Bill and Ted' from as far back as the '80s.

Director James Cameron, however, is working on his follow-up simultaneously and is reported to shoot them all back-to-back, according to Movie News Guide. It was rumored that the franchise will consist of four films, each one a feat of innovative filmmaking. 'Avatar 2' was originally scheduled for a 2016 release date but due to delays has been pushed back to a new slot for Christmas day of 2017.

According to Cinema Blend, no further plot details have been revealed except that the future films in the franchise would explore brand new habitats and cultures. Cameron will be in collaboration with a big group of writers to help with the back-to-back filming of all three remaining films. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will not be the only one returning in the succeeding projects.

Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Scully, is reported as signed on for the next four years or so and his co-star and on-screen love interest Zoe Saldana, who plays the Na'vi Neytiri, is confirmed the same.

'Avatar 2' is the follow-up to Cameron's highest grossing film of all time that first debuted in cinemas worldwide last 2009. The first film grossed a staggering $2.78 billion against a $237 budget, according to Box Office Mojo, and received generous praises from critics as well as multiple accolades such as Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. The science-fiction and fantasy film bested the previous highest grossing film 'Titanic' - also a Cameron masterpiece.
