The Japanese tech giant Sony has started rolling out the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA Update to Sony Xperia Z, ZR, and ZL Series via over-the-air. The Android 5.1.1 update brings a build number 10.7.A.0.222.
According to an update from Xperia Blog, several Sony devices including Xperia Tablet Z LTE, Xperia Tablet Z Wi-Fi, Xperia ZR, Xperia ZL and Xperia Z are now getting the Android 5.1.1 update (build number - 10.7.A.0.222), reports Yibada.
Those users who receive the update notification should just select the 'Yes, Download' option and after downloading, choose 'Install now.' The mobile gadget will restart automatically then the operating system will be updated to the newest version.
However, the Neuro gadget reports that the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA update carries a build number 10.7.A.0.222 that doesn't contain the patch for the Stagefright exploit. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z.
Since the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop brings only bug fixes and improvements, hence, this is not considered as a major update for the aforementioned devices. However, it still indicates that new features will be experienced and witnessed for those devices since its former Android 5.0 Lollipop will be updated to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
Same with the other software update, the new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA Update was released bit by bit. Meaning, it will depend on the user's region and carrier, whether its device will get the update sooner or later. To see if there are latest updates on the device, a user can manually check it by going to Settings->about device->System Updates->Check for update.
In 2013, Sony had promised that it would provide the latest Android updates for the Xperia Z series device. Sony appears granting that promise, so far.
Sony had reportedly delivered the Android M Developer Preview for the Xperia Z3 models, the Xperia Z2 models, Xperia Z1 models, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 and Xperia T2 Ultra, in June, International Business times wrote.
After the Sony Xperia Z, ZR, ZL devices has been confirmed on receiving the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA Update. Current rumors suggest that the Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet variants could also receive the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
