Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on board in Snowden and revealed his thoughts about playing the titular character. Gordon-Levitt is starring alongside Shailene Woodley who is set to play a rather more corporeal character compared to her previous roles.
Snowden is set to debut in US theaters soon and talking to Los Angeles Daily News, Gordon-Levitt admitted that he knew very little about the issue when director Oliver Stone called him. According to Gordon-Levitt, he invested his time on research and found the subject fascinating and the character of Edward Snowden as incredible.
"I spent some time looking into it, and it's a fascinating story. He's an incredible character to play, regardless of whether you do or don't agree with what he did. Personally, I very much admire what he did but I think everyone ought to decide for themselves.", Gordon-Levitt said. Gordon-Levitt also said that regardless of how the media tries to put it in a simple form, he thinks of the issue as something not simple and is comprised of many layers.
Moreover, in a report by Vulture, the actor revealed that he was able to meet Edward Snowden, although, he later chose not to give out more details about the event. The actor also said that he does not want to impersonate Snowden in the upcoming film, but did want to look and sound like him. "I wanted to have the basic air of who they are", he said.
Aside from Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley is also on board as Snowden's pole-dancer girlfriend, Lindsay Mills. According to Movie News Guide, the actress went on an intensive training in pole dancing, which is something that Mills is said to be good at. Playing as a stripper is a new genre for Woodley who is most notable for her performance as Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars and as Tris Prior in the Divergent franchise.
The film Snowden centers on the CIA employee who revealed classified information concerning worldwide surveillance program and the privacy of citizens. It is directed by Oliver Stone from the screenplay by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald. It is set to hit theaters on Christmas 2015.
