‘Trainspotting 2’ Updates: Ewan McGregor to reprise role as "Rent Boy" Renton; Director Danny Boyle returns to helm sequel

'Trainspotting 2' will feature Ewan McGregor's return to the character Mark "Rent Boy" Renton as well as the rest of the original main cast. Director Danny Boyle will also return to helm the sequel to his iconic black comedy crime drama film from 1996.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Danny Boyle will be returning to direct a follow-up of his cult classic film from the 1990's. The multi-award winning filmmaker admitted that his next film after his most recent biopic masterpiece 'Steve Jobs' will be 'Trainspotting 2'. He said that since four of his main cast have confirmed to reprise their roles, all he needed to do was get their schedules together so they can all start work on the sequel.

Actors Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle will be returning for the follow-up. It was reported by the Daily Mail that McGregor previously refused to work with Boyle again since the director chose Leonardo DiCaprio over him for another cult film 'The Beach'. It was then revealed that the two have since patched things up and will be working together again.

McGregor will be returning to portray his character Mark "Rent Boy" Renton, a heroine addict. The actor hinted at his possible involvement in the second film last June. It was also reported that the 44-year old leading man will be hands-on with providing input for the new script.

The sequel will be a loose live-action adaptation of author Irvine Welsh's novel 'Porno', according to an article by Vulture. Boyle said that he and script writer John Hodge will be making a lot of changes since the book originally focuses on the Johnny Lee Miller's "Sick Boy" Williamson instead of McGregor's character.

He explained, "The great thing about the way John adapted the original book is that he took the spirit of the book and just ran with it, because really, strictly speaking, it's not an adaptation of the book. You shouldn't think of it as an adaptation of Porno. It's more like a Trainspotting 2. There might be some characters we use from the book, but it'll be its own thing, I think."

'Trainspotting 2' will be a follow-up to the widely popular and critically acclaimed cinematic adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name. The first film earned numerous accolades including an Academy Award nomination for Writing Adapted Screenplay for Hodge, three British Academy Film Awards nominations, and Award for Best Film from the Seattle International Film Festival. It was universally praised by critics as well as audiences and it went on to have a huge influence in pop culture despite its controversial themes of drug use.
