'Mary Poppins' will be remade by Disney to be set 20-years after the original film from the 1960's starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Fans are not too thrilled about the announcement as they continue to storm social media to voice out their dismay, frustration, and disappointment.
Reboots of classic animated films by Disney are not such uncommon things these days with live-action adaptations coming left and right including 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Mulan', 'Jungle Book', 'Pinocchio' and now 'Mary Poppins'.
According to Variety, Disney is looking to reunite 'Into the Woods' filmmaker Rob Marshall and its producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt for the remake. It was also announced that the upcoming musical's storyline will take place in post-depression era London 20-years after the events of the original film.
The 1964 cinematic release starred the iconic Julie Andrews as the titular character with Dick Van Dyke for the key supporting role of Bert the cockney jack-of-all-trades. According to The Telegraph, the original film that combined live action, animation and musical comedy drew loosely from the first book in author PL Travers' series. The reboot is said to have the stories of all eight books combined and it will also have contain some "darker" elements.
It was further reported that authentic English actors will be cast as Bert - since the studio wants to let go of the cockney accent Dick Van Dyke was known for in the original film. As for the title role of Mary Poppins, there have been no official announcements as of the present. Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, and Carey Mulligan have been some of the big names dropped to follow in Andrews' footsteps.
Several fans of the classic took to social media to voice out their concerns for the remake, according to the Hollywood Life. Most were angered enough as seen on hot topic threads on Twitter including one user @Ali_Alicia5 saying, "Whoever is making the new Mary Poppins you are going to ruin my childhood bye." Another user @cjdamico let loose some sarcasm saying, "Oh, we're remaking Mary Poppins? Why don't we remake Citizen Kane while we're at it? Maybe Gone with the Wind?"
