'Mulan' is finally getting a live-action adaptation and the 29-year-old 'Glee' star Jenna Ushkowitz has been in talks with the studio to play the feisty Disney Princess. The film is believed to premiere in 2017.
As reported by PopCrush, Disney have found its warrior princess in the person of Jenna Ushkowitz. The singing-actress is reportedly in negotations to play the much sought-after role in the studios' live-action remake of the classic animated series.
Meanwhile, the source was believed to be revealed to Mogul, said:"Among the potential talent for 'Mulan,' virtually none possesses the combination of star quality, relevant age, musical talent, and beauty Disney would need for its lead. It's unsurprising that fans are rallying behind Ushkowitz who, thanks to her long tenure as Tina Cohen-Chang on 'Glee,' has significant credibility with this film's target audience."
When Disney finally announced the live-action film, which is believed to be release on 2017 (or perhaps 2018), its huge following all over the world went wild. But when it was revealed that an actress of American descent and culture was to play the lead role, all hell broke loose.
According to Movie News Guide, fans were so upset with Disney's decision to cast an American actress that a petition to change it started.
"Take a stand against whitewashing in our media. Sign this petition to tell Disney that we demand to see them cast an Asian Mulan!" reads the petition.
And luckily for the film's devotees, it worked and Jenna Ushkowitz is set to play the role of Fa Mulan.
After the movie's release, it went on to become a massive commercial success - grossing $304M and winning various nominations, two of which are the Golden Globes and the Academy Award.
'Mulan' is originally based from the poem 'The Ballad of Mulan,' which features the on the legendary Chinese warrior Hua Mulan. The film adaptation was first released in I 1998, then the sequel followed in 2004. In the film, Mulan is the only daughter of a senior war veteran who disguised as a man and drafted herself in the army in place of her father.
Although Jenna Ushkowitz will reportedly play the lead role in the upcoming live-action adaptation of 'Mulan,' the actress has still yet to confirm the news as of this writing. The film is predicted to open in cinemas on 2017.
