New AMD Radeon R9 380X 'Tonga' GPU Leaked Photos Surface

AMD has been reportedly developing a new graphics card that will join the R9 series, the Radeon R9 380X. Photos of the actual product, codenamed the "Tonga" GPU, has been leaked through the internet by a tech website.

The leaked photos were uploaded by a non-English tech website called ExPreview. It shows a medium-large-sized AMD Radeon GPU with the same black and red color scheme found in other models.

AMD has been shelling out the R9 series video cards to compete with NVIDIA's more expensive GTX series of cards. What are the exact specs of this new AMD R9 Radeon 380X GPU?

The Tonga GPU will have 2048 stream processors and a 384-bit memory bus, according to KitGuru. The performance would be much better than the Radeon R9 380, but the 380X will considerably consume more power as well. It will also beat the Radeon R9 280X GPU because of its new GCN 1.2 architecture.

AMD's new XFX model is also shown having a large heatsink and two air coolers. The picture kind of shows that the new Radeon R9 380X is kind of plastic-y, but maybe it's just the photo quality. One good feature for the fans is that it can be easily removed with just a small squeeze to open the locks to remove the fan itself. This helps the user to easily clean the heatsink inside, dusting off and taking out large pieces of dust that might otherwise cause the XFX card to overheat.

How much will the new AMD Radeon R9 380X probably cost? There is still no official word or announcement, but ExtremeTech estimates that it would most likely be at $249. It could also rival NVIDIA's GTX 960 video card.

Since the leaked image shows the finished product already, AMD might soon launch the product in a couple of days or weeks. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is busy with its upcoming Pascal GPU chips for next year.
